The Mudlavia Hotel and Spa is located between Attica and Kramer Indiana. You need good directions to this site. Fortunately, we now have them. The only visible sign of the buildings from the road approaching it are the remains of the smokestack. The buildings themselves are extremely grown over with assorted vines and other greenery. All windows are broken and no doors remain in the structure. There is a downed tree across the road leading to the buildings but the walk back is not bad. July 8, 2006 2 days prior to Full Moon Clear night with no breeze. We arrived at Mudlavia at 9:35 pm. After taking several outside pictures we entered the building. Graffiti is everywhere. You enter and proceed down a hallway lined with doorways into a larger "common room" complete with a fireplace. The fireplace was filled with fairly fresh ashes as well as assorted beer bottles and cans. Split firewood was stacked haphazardly in the same room. This location is obviously used by someone for parties. There are 3 rooms directly off this one. The room behind the fireplace has the roof partially caved in, opposite of this room you will find another room that is filled with an abundance of dirt and overgrowth of the surrounding woods. The third room can be reached via a short hallway directly behind and below the stairs. The stairs(located in the "common room") still have the remnants of carpeting as well as years of accumulation of dust and debris. Upstairs are 2 hallways with doorways lining both sides. At the end of both hallways are exit doorways(no door on either). One is nothing but a sheer drop off, the other has a metal landing and stairs leading to the ground below.( Be very careful as one of the steps is missing) To reach the boiler room area on the lower level you must exit this building and enter another building(covered in vines). We divided into 2 groups and set off to investigate the area. The first group headed to the lower lever and the boiler room, the second group concentrated on the "main" building with the plan to switch places in order to let everyone see all areas of this site. At 9:50 pm one of our investigators on the lower level suffered a back spasm. It passed but, was repeated with more pain and the feeling of heat at 10:30 pm. By 10:00 pm the group in the boiler room had already lost energy in 3 sets of batteries that were being used in the digital camera. Hundreds of photograph were taken as well as video and DVR recordings and digital sound recordings. EMF meters and digital thermometers were also used. The EMF meter registered a spike from 2 to 5 in the basement at 10:35 pm in a cold spot. Temperature ranged from 60 - 65 degrees. One cold spot measured 56.6 degrees while the warmest temperature taken was 72 degrees. The 2nd group were taking photographs of the downstairs area of the main building when a loud thump was heard upstairs. No One was up there. Upon proceeding to the upstairs more photographs were taken of all of the rooms and hallways. There is a lot of vandalism present here. Entire walls have been broken out between rooms with debris everywhere. There is a railing on the staircase itself but, once on the second floor there is nothing around the area of the stairs except open space. The metal landing outside one of the exit doors is sturdy and several investigators went out on this platform to take pictures of the outside and the next building. One investigator went down the stairs with the video camera to tape footage there. Several team members complained of it being extremely hot on this level while others were fastening their jackets tighter around themselves. Returning to the "common room" we proceeded to examine the room under the stairs in more detail. We passed through a cold spot in the hallway leading to the room( aprox. 5 degree drop in temperature) but, upon entering the room one member became extremely hot and began sweating. A separate member became cold enough as to be shaking with it and began crying uncontrollably, complaining of an extreme feeling of dread in the room. After leaving the building the feeling left and our member returned to normal. After switching places, without discussing what had happened in either place, the 1st team experienced cold in the "common room" and while taking readings and photographs there heard a succession of 3 loud thumps from upstairs. Footsteps were heard behind a team member but, no one walking nearby. In the first room on the left upstairs the flashlight and camcorder went out, completely drained of energy. Temperature upstairs registered at 56.6 degrees yet, all members were complaining of the heat there. Throughout the investigation, sounds were heard from outside in the woods nearby. 3 team members returned to the beginning of the drive. During approximately 20 minutes of waiting each member in turn checked behind themselves into the woods because of a feeling of being watched. the sound of something large moving through the trees followed by a large branch snapping nearby caused them to return to the main building. On the walk back, one team member kept seeing(out of the corner of the eye) something move on the right but appear to duck when looked at. As they approached the first building 2 team members saw a dark shape cross the road in front of them. Estimated size of the shape is between 4 and 5 feet tall and bulky. Our group left the area at 11:30 pm We definitely want to re investigate this site both in the daytime along with another night investigation.
This was Mudlavia in all her glory. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and the building was a wonder of the time. Three unexplained fires in 50 years destroyed this "Grand Dame" of architecture.
July 14, 2007 Arrived at Mudlavia just before 10:00 p.m. Clear night, no noticeable clouds. There were 4 people wandering outside the building when we arrived. They left within 30 minutes of our arrival. Present at the investigation were Curtis, Kenny, John and Junior Investigator Garrick. The team drove up to the entrance of the building. Throughout the investigation the sound of thumping from within the building was heard by all. While upstairs the sound seemed to be coming from downstairs and vice versa. Approximately 250 photos were taken along with DVR and digital voice recordings. The team left the site at 1:30 a.m.
